Serbian Folklore Summer School on the topic:
Plants and Herbs in Serbian Folklore and Folk Literature
6 - 20 July 2014

Course description

  1. Theoretical part (venue: Faculty of Philosophy, University of Novi Sad; 25 classes). Introduction to traditional culture; herb codes in traditional culture; meanings and functions of selected types of herbs and plants in traditional Serbian culture; basics of field research (techniques and methods).
  2. Field research (venue: Stara planina, Knjaževac; 7 days). Applying acquired theoretical knowledge in practice: discussions with invited informants, field trips to Stara planina (use of herbs in magic and rituals, introduction to traditional phytotherapy, identifying and collecting specific types of herbs, floral ornaments on clothes, folk food and drink – honey herbs/honey, vine/wine...).

The Summer School is worth 10 ECTS credits.
Courses will be taught in Serbian and English.
Price: 850 € (in RSD)
The price includes tuition, field activities and field trip, tickets for museums and archeological excavations, accommodation and food.
All participants are expected to pay their own travel costs.

N.B. There is a possibility for the organiser to cover accommodation expenses and tuition for several students. Please, send us your motivation letter, CV and application letter with an explanation that you require the necessary financial help, as soon as possible.

Number of accepted applicants is limited (30).

All interested applicants from Serbia and abroad can apply.
Preference will be given to students (at BA, MA and PhD levels) from the following fields: literature, linguistics, ethnology, ethnomusicology, anthropology, sociology, philosophy, history, turismology, botanics, biology, ethnobotanics, phytopharmacy and similar disciplines.
