GOVORNICI:

Philip Golub
About the speaker
A widely published author, Dr. Philip Golub is senior lecturer in world politics, Institut d’études européennes, Université Paris 8, and Visiting Professor, American University of Paris (AUP). He formerly taught at l’Institut d’études politiques de Paris (IEP). His research areas include: Historical Sociology of International Relations, Globalisation, US foreign policy, and East Asian regionalism. His forthcoming book (May, 2010), Power, Profit and Prestige: a History of American Imperial Expansion, is published by Pluto Press, London.
About the topic
Rethinking Globalisation: Towards a Polycentric World System. The emergence or re-emergence of China, India and other post-colonial states as ‘active units’ of the international system, that is units that shape the world environment rather than simply being shaped by it, undoubtedly represents one of the most significant structural transformations in contemporary world history. It is upsetting the hierarchies constructed in the late-modern period and questions the dominant narrative of late twentieth century globalisation. Putting the transformation in historical perspective, the discussion will focus on its theoretical and practical implications.

Noelle Burgi
About the speaker
Political scientist and sociologist, Dr. Noëlle Burgi is a senior researcher at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), Centre européen de sociologie et de science politique de la Sorbonne (CESSP), Université Paris I-Panthéon Sorbonne. Her research centres on state transformation, the reconfiguration of European social policies, the “new managerialism” and its effects on individual life trajectories and identity. She has done extensive field work on work conditions in the service sector, as well as the unemployed and precarious workers. Her last book, La machine à exclure. Les faux-semblants du retour à l’emploi, was published by La Découverte in 2006.
About the topic
The New Managerialism: Reshaping Social Relations in Europe. The reconfiguration of social relations due to the spread of neo-liberal norms is changing the conditions of (un)employment and life in Europe. In the emerging normative order, collective social rights are being superseded by a new managerialism that claims to favour individual autonomy and responsibility. But, as a vast sociological literature as well as psycho-social studies emphasise, this “autonomy” and “responsibility” are illusory. As the studies of this and other authors show, rather than empowering the individual, it constrains, generates vulnerability, and produces social anomie.
