(1)    Seminar 3 Jewish Studies: Acculturation and Distinction - Jewish History in Modern Times

In this course we will concentrate on the most important steps in European Jewish emancipation, starting by looking at living conditions of Jews in modern times, then tracking the development of Jewish Society throughout the 19 th and 20 th centuries. Topics to be discussed include Zionism, mass immigration of Holocaust survivors and Jews from Arab countries in the 1950s, peace and war with the neighboring Arab states and various schisms within Israeli society.

(2)    Seminar 4 History: South East European Historiography in Transition - From National Tradition to European Patterns

At a time of European integration national tradition, innovative topics, methods and technical support still form the basis of historiography, while at the same time new social, cultural and political developments strongly influence scientific work.

In this course on South-Eastern European Historiography in Transition we will:
- introduce students to the general aspects of the topic
- present Romania and Slovenia as case studies
- compare and analyse the two examples
- understand the actual problems of historiography

The Graz University Summer School offers an opportunity for students to participate in a summer school offering seminars and transferable skills workshops. 6 ECTS will be awarded to students (for participation in the summer school and a seminar paper).
